Quantifying Groundwater Resources for Municipal Water Use in a Data-Scarce Region

چکیده
Groundwater is a major source of drinking water worldwide, often considered more reliable than surface and accessible. Nowadays, there wide recognition by the scientific community that groundwater resources are under threat from overexploitation pollution. Furthermore, frequent prolonged drought periods due to climate change can seriously affect recharge. For an appropriate sustainable management systems supplied springs and/or withdrawn aquifers through drilling wells or drainage galleries, need arises properly quantify availability, mainly at monthly scale, as recharge influenced seasonality, especially in Mediterranean areas. Such evaluation particularly important for ungauged bodies. This case aquifer supplying Santissima Aqueduct, oldest supply infrastructure city Messina Sicily (Southern Italy), whose flows measured only occasionally spring sampling abstraction plants. Moreover, these plants barely maintained because they difficult reach. In this study, assessment Aqueduct carried out GIS-based inverse hydrogeological balance methodology. Although approach was originally designed assess annual wherever model conceptualization system hindered lack data, present study some changes proposed adjust scale. particular, procedure evapotranspiration based on Global Aridity Index within Budyko framework. The application methodology shows satisfactory results, suggesting it be successfully applied estimation context where information relevant planning management.

The Economics of Managing Scarce Water Resources
Recent events, news articles in the popular press, and research outside the field of economics have raised alarming questions about the sufficiency of global freshwater supplies and the potentially devastating impacts of current and future water shortages. For example, the 2008 Beijing Olympics drew attention to the problems of pollution and water shortages in China, where massive infrastructur...
متن کاملWater quality assessment for groundwater around a municipal waste dumpsite
The dataset for this article contains geostatistical analysis of the level to which groundwater quality around a municipal waste dumpsite located in Oke-Afa, Oshodi/Isolo area of Lagos state, southwestern has been compromised for drinking. Groundwater samples were collected from eight hand-dug wells and two borehole wells around or near the dumpsite. The pH, turbidity, salinity, conductivity, t...
